Rowlett History


Daniel Rowlett and a small group of made up of several families from Tennessee arrived in Texas in 1835. The band of settlers made their homes in the Tulip Bend area of the Red River. Eventually, Daniel Rowlett earned a land grant for his service in the Texas revolution. Rowlett's land grant allowed him to obtain land in Collin County. The creek on the land became known as Rowlett's creek.

The community of Rowlett began when companies of immigrants settled in the area in the 1840s. The first post office in Rowlett was opened in 1880. Originally the post office was named for the Postmaster Austin Morris. Later, the name was changed to Rowlett for the creek named after Daniel Rowlett. Railroads brought more people into the area, and by the turn of the century the community of Rowlett was a thriving community with many stores and others services.

Despite the city's long history, Rowlett was not officially incorporated until 1952. Following the city's official incorporation, the city experienced major change. In 1971, the The Lake Ray Hubbard Reservoir was completed. The addition of the reservoir to the area became a huge boon to the city. The large body of water added 30 miles of shoreline, great recreational opportunities, and clean drinking water to Rowlett.

- Rowlett was listed among the “Largest North Texas Economic Development Agencies” by the Dallas Business Journal in March 2012.

- The Rowlett Public Library has been awarded "Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award" by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association for seven consecutive years.

- Rowlett was named "Playful City USA" by the non-profit KaBOOM. Rowlett was selected as one of only 118 cities across the country, and has the distinction of being one of only six Texas cities that have been named a Playful City USA. The distinction speaks highly of the city's efforts to engage its citizens through its highly success parks and recreation program and the many recreational programs and services it offers its residents.

- Rowlett was recognized for "Excellence in Community Economic Development" for five consecutive years by the Texas Economic Development Council.

- Bayview Marina
The city's Bayview Marina is the newest marina on Lake Ray Hubbard. The marina is home to over 900 floating slips for sailboats and power boats. The marina is also complete with a variety of amenities, such as barbecue decks, picnic areas, showers, a swimming pool, and a private boat launch. The marina's storage facility accommodates more than 350 RV's and boats. Additionally, the marina's floating slips and dry storage allow members 24 hour access.

- Historic Coyle Farmstead
The Historic Coyle Farmstead is a historic structure consisting of a farmhouse and several outbuildings. The historic Rowlett site is preserved at Pecan Grove Park, adjacent to the Rowlett Community Centre.

- Waterview Golf Course
The city's fantastic Waterview Golf Club features a championship golf course that is able to challenge golfers of all abilities. Once the site of a pasture, today the gorgeous fairways are home to a rolling landscape of lush greenery with over 15 acres of lakes and trees. The extensive par 72 course offers additional on-site amenities such as an extensive practice facility, and a bar and grill. The family-friendly water park features a beach entry pool, concession stands, a current channel, a kids play area, lap pool, a gift shop, a sand volleyball court, squirt features, two twenty-foot slides, a Water Gym, and water umbrellas.
