Royse City History

During the mid-19th century, the future grandmother-in-law and future brother-in-laws of Burgess Griffin Royse bought several tracts of land that were to one day become Royse City. On August 8, 1880, Burgess Griffin Royse married Mrs. McCasland’s granddaughter and began his life in what would one day become Royse City. In 1886, Royse began platting what would become his namesake town. Burgess Griffin Royse possessed a savvy business sense, and platted his town directly on the new route for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad line that was to pass between Dallas and Greenville.

Soon after platting the town's site, Royse sold the first lot to his nephew Albert Royse and Alf Reese. The lot's sale was followed by many more, and soon the train service proved to be a major economic boon to the area. Royse City grew quickly, and by 1890, the small community had reached a population of over 1,000 residents.

By the early 1900s the city boasted over 20 shops, two cotton gins, and a gristmill. The small community was thriving thanks to the area's successful farming and cotton manufacturing industries.

Over the next decades, the area's cotton and sorghum industries grew. With the city's success, the town flourished. Cars, trucks, and other forms of transportation were introduced into the area, and Royse City grew as the twentieth century progressed.
