Flower Mound is named for the large flower covered mound that rises 650 feet above sea level and 50 feet above the surrounding country landscape. One of Texas' most respected historians, A.C. Greene, believed the hill received its name in the 1840s due to the large amount of wild flowers that grow upon the raised area. Originally the land was part of the great American Black Land Prairie. The prairie ran from the Rio Grande to Canada and from Mississippi to the Rockies. Today, 1,000 acres of the original prairie remain.
